Avatar IV (AV4) videos inside Templates: recommended API flow + roadmap?

Hi HeyGen community,

We are trying to use Avatar IV (AV4) videos together with Templates (V3).

Goal:

  • A user uploads a photo.
  • We generate an Avatar IV video from that photo.
  • We want to place that result inside a HeyGen template (branding/layout/scenes), ideally by “replacing the avatar” or otherwise injecting the AV4 output into the template.

Current confusion / blocker:

  • AV4 generation seems to be based on image_key (and voice/script), but template avatar replacement expects a character_id.
  • We don’t understand how to bridge these two flows (or if AV4 can be used in templates at all).

Questions:

  • Is it currently supported to use Avatar IV as the avatar source in Template V3 (i.e., replace an avatar slot with an AV4 avatar)?
  • If not, what is the recommended approach: generate AV4 first and then insert the rendered AV4 video into a template via a video placeholder (URL/asset_id)?
  • If you recommend the “video placeholder” approach, what is the correct end-to-end API sequence (upload photo → AV4 generate → get final video URL/asset → template generate)?
  • Is there a roadmap / planned support for “AV4 directly in templates” (avatar replacement) and any expected timeline?

Thanks a lot for any guidance or examples.

Regards,
Michael
